8th March saw the inaugural Sports Day take place at King’s College India. Students from across the school came together in their House Teams to compete within the different events.
From the Early Years Foundation Students, the Primary and the Secondary students competed with a great sporting spirit, cheered on by their peers but also by their parents, many of whom turned out to support the school.
In the junior events, the egg-and-spoon race was an early favourite with the spectators as the very young legs did their very best to get to the finish line without spilling their precious cargo. This was followed by a family race in which the parents showed just how competitive they can be in their ability to create beautiful garlands. Finally, the Sack Race was a super way to round off this part of the event – all presented in beautiful sunshine.
The Secondary event was very competitive indeed with the House captains urging their athletes and supporters with equal vigour. After the opening speech by Dr Nick Duggan, the Headmaster of King’s College India, the Houses presented the walk past, culminating the recital of the oath.
It was then time for the athletic events. Boys and girls competed in the individual sections – 800 metres; 200 metres;100 metres and the 4 x 100 metres. The students were really keen to cheer on everyone who was competing and it was particularly heartening to hear the final students receive a tumultuous reception as they were about to finish their races.
The tremendous sense of good will and cooperation was reflected in the Parents’ participation in the 100 metres for men and 100 metres for women. Several of the parents also consented to present the awards to the students.
The final events centred around the Tug of War between Teachers and Students; Teachers and Parents and the Parents and the Students. Let’s just say that the Students were undefeated in all of these events!
The overall winner of the Sports Day trophy were Sherborne House. Most people would agree that the whole school and the parent body had a brilliant time. Congratulations to Mr Ramesh for his meticulous preparation and oversight of the whole event.
