In addition to weekly class music lessons, many students choose to learn individual instruments with our specialist teachers or Director of Music. Initially, these include guitar, piano, alto saxophone, bass, drums and traditional Indian instruments. In the near future, we intend to add string, brass and woodwind.
Individual music lessons rotate throughout the school day and Prep department children check their lesson times at the beginning of each week. Students are given a practice diary, which must be brought to lessons as it is the main form of communication between the teacher and parents.
Class music lessons are practical in nature and involve trying out percussion instruments and singing, as well as traditional Indian music. All children in Year 4 play the recorder because this often sparks an interest in other instruments. Students are also taught to use computers for composition and production.
We encourage all budding musicians and/or stage stars to have their first tangible experience of performing live at King’s College, India. Concerts and recitals feature regularly, and children also perform in weekly assemblies and at Open Days. We are planning an annual Inter-House Music Competition, which we hope will be popular and hotly contested! It will involve a number of different sections, including a whole house singing performance.
